A Little Bit About Me:
Born in California
Spent the first 10 yrs of my life camping, at the beach, and tormenting older brother
Moved to Virginia to live in a house on the lake
bitter disappointment in learning that the house was not actually "on" the lake
Played field hockey, immensely enjoy whacking other people and occasionally the ball with wooden sticks
found that I loved art, did not like teacher
spent a few years getting paid to wonder around cat walks in fancy clothes
went to school and put my hands in clay, liked it, but feared an artists life
moved around a lot on account of a boy, played with more clay- it's such a dirty flirter
went back to school, gave into the temptation to play with clay again and fell in love
found out clay is not only a dirty flirter, but a terrible mistress. Loves you one moment and then hates you the next.
reminded myself that I chose this
graduated with a Masters in Education, so I could get a job and buy more mud
bought more mud
now I teach and make yummy mud pies all day long
Artist Statement:
I’ve been making art since I could touch crayon to paper, or wall as the case may have been. Mostly a self-taught artist, I have been working exclusively in clay for the past six years. My pottery is a reflection of my youth. It exhibits my love for graphic design and my years spent helping my mom cultivate, and eventually adopt as my own, a love of growing things. I’m in love with the idea of raw and pristine so you’ll see some of the tension between the two in my work as many parts of the red earthenware clay are left unglazed. My work is mostly functional in nature. I want people to use the pieces I create. Both hand built and thrown the surfaces of my pieces reflect joy and celebrate the beautiful spontaneity of nature.
